I know that most of us are incredibly busy and it's difficult to fit another item onto your to-do list, but this is an important topic. In fact, it has been for quite some time. My company's namesake has been publishing on this topic since 2008:-Stephens, D. B. (2008). Recent trends in hydrogeology and environmental consulting and perspective on maturing of hydrogeology profession.Journal of Hydrologic Engineering,13(1), 20-27.-Stephens, D. B. (2009). An imminent human resource crisis in ground water hydrology?Groundwater,47(2), 176-183.-Stephens, D. B. (2018). Perspectives from a Water Resources and Environmental Consultant.Water Resources IMPACT,20(6), 16-18.I can't think of a single consulting firm or public agency that isn't hiring right now, and have been for some time. Positions aren't being filled because there just physically aren't enough graduates, especially at the master's level. While this trend benefits be personally in term of job security and potential for increased pay due to labor scarcity, I'm concerned about what will happen if we as an industry don't come up with a solution. You can live without many things, but water is not one of them.Excuse me while I climb down from this soap box I somehow found myself on...

Town criers.....Oh yay, oh yay I once went to the national town crier's championship, apart from being ever so slightly deafened, it was good to see Geoff from Sutton in Ashfield (names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent) win hands down. In medieval England, town criers were the way that information was spread. News was prepared and distributed (verbally) to the masses. Then newspapers evolved. Town criers became less important. The news was prepared and distributed (in print) to the masses. Then the internet evolved. Newspapers faced tough competition. The news was prepared and distributed (on line) to the masses. Two things leap out 1) For all three examples, how accurate has the information been? Who said fake news was a recent concept? 2) What skill has been required throughout time by the receiver of that information? - Critical thinking. The ability to take on board information and find the value/facts from it. #criticalthinking #askquestions Image - Birmingham Museums Trust
